Adobe Project Niji

Modern layout tools for crafting rich, responsive experiences that scale to multiple platforms

Top publishers struggle to stand out in the sea of content as the bar to reach digital audiences continues to drop. Historically, in the world of print, the playing field was level where the outstanding products were those with the best editorial content, the best photography, the best design, or usually some combination of those factors. But, as the need to deliver this content across screens emerged, publishers struggle to meet the reflowable content requirements with their in-house skillsets. Ultimately, Project Niji empowered these content creators to once again stand out with easy to use reflowable publishing options, integrated with leading content management systems.

PROBLEM

Professional storytellers and marketers need ways to rapidly create engaging, interactive content that scales to various screens and channels without resorting to boring, one-size-fits-all CMS templates.

STRATEGY / COLLABORATION

My innovation team took on the challenge of allowing these content creators to produce beautiful web publications, enabling the quality of their content to again shine, in what became known as Project Niji. I initiated the project with a deep understanding of the user needs, by having my team of product innovators sit down with a series of content partners to ideate on a better solution. Our key partners included Garden & Gun (a magazine publisher), Charity: Water (a non-profit), and Sasaki Associates (an architecture firm).

SOLUTION

Project Niji was a next-generation browser-based content layout tool that produces clean, responsive HTML. It also integrated directly with WordPress and other CMS systems as well as supporting the ability to reach syndication channels such as Facebook Instant Articles, Google AMP and Apple News. The tool was powerful enough for a professional designer, yet simple enough for a content producer to use.
